2 Socks on 1 Long Circular - Heel Turn & Repositioning

We now have cast on, knitted the cuffs and finished the heel flaps. Knitting the heel flaps were pretty straight forward - both heel flaps were knitted back and forth, row by row until desired width. Now, things start to get interesting.

Up till now the socks have been knitted row by row, simultaneously. The next step is turning the heel. The heel turns are done ONE sock at a time, and at the same time, reorienting the profile of both socks.

I'm still using the Sock A Sock B convention. To summarize this step, here's what you do. Turn the heel of Sock A then pick up left gusset stitches of Sock A. Turn heel of Sock B then pick up left gusset stitches of Sock B. Knit instep of Sock B then pick up right gusset stitches of Sock B. Knit instep of Sock A then pick up right gusset stitches of Sock A. While we do this, we reorient the stitches simultaneously to knit the foot of the sock.

Now, step by step:
  • We finish knitting the heel flap of both socks ending with the wrong side row.

  • Turn the heel of Sock A ending with a wrong side row.

  • Knit across heel stiches of Sock A and continue to pick up and knit stitches on the left side of Sock A heel flap.

  • Pull all stitches of Sock A onto the cable.

  • Turn the heel of Sock B ending with a wrong side row.

  • Knit across 1/2 heel stiches of Sock B onto a stitch holder. Here I used a dpn needle.

  • Knit the other half of Sock B heel stitches.

  • Continue to pick up and knit stitches on the left side of Sock B heel flap.

  • Place marker and continue to knit 1/2 the instep stitches of Sock B.

  • STOP. Return needles to home position.

  • Pull back needle out and knit the other 1/2 of instep stitches of Sock B.

  • Place marker and pick up and knit right gusset of Sock B.

  • Knit the heel stitches that you have on the stich holder.

  • Sock B is done.

  • Return to Sock A and knit 1/2 of the instep stitches and place them onto stitch holder.

  • Knit other 1/2 of instep stitches.

  • Place marker. Pick up right gusset stitches of Sock A.

  • Knit 1/2 of Sock A heel stitches.

  • STOP. Return to home position.

  • Now we need to knit one more round to get Sock A into the correct position. When you do this round, knit the stitches you have on hold.
This is what you end up with. Socks in home position, ready to start the foot of the sock.

  • I know this was posted a while ago, but I just found it. Awesome tutorial! This is how I do socks as well, but I am a very intuitive knitter, so I have trouble explaining HOW I do it to other people. Now I know just where to point them when they ask me! :) Thanks!

  • I also just used this for the first time, and it worked beautifully. I was skeptical, but I just followed your directions and everything worked out!

  • Wonderful tutorial!
I am just learning to knit socks on magic loop (as well as knit period really) and your explanation of what the relationship of the dp needle patterns to the magic loop is invaluable! Before I read your tutorial I was struggling to understand!
