2 Socks on 1 Long Circular - Cast On

Let us begin knitting 2 socks at the same time on 1 long circular.

By now, you should have the sock pattern in mind and the yarn you plan to use. As much as I dislike it, I knit a gauge swatch to determine what needle size to use to achieve the garment size that I want. For a sock swatch, I cast on about 50 stitches and knit a circular swatch. I then decide on the fabric that I like and go with that needle size.

Here I have decided on size 2 US needles. I will be using a 40” circular, size 2 US needle.

To begin, you need to cast on both socks at the same time. I like to cast on over 2 needles of the size that you’re going to use, very tightly. Then before I begin knitting, I remove the 2nd needle and I always seem to get a nice edge that is not too tight.
  • Cast on half the total number of stitches from one ball of yarn. Let's call this Sock A.

  • Pick up the 2nd ball of yarn and cast on the total number of stitches for the sock. This is Sock B.

  • Push all the stitches to the center of the cable. Find the middle of Sock B's cast on stitches and pull a loop through.

  • Align the needles side by side. Now pick up where you left off on Sock A. Bring the yarn over to the other needle and start casting on the remainder of the stitches onto the other needle.

  • You should end up with something looking like this.

  • Be careful not to twist. Join and start knitting. Knit each sock separately. Knit a row for Sock A, drop the yarn, pick up the yarn for Sock B and knit a row, return to home position, knit Sock B, drop yarn, knit Sock A. I'm knitting a 2x2 rib for about 1 inch.

  • Here is a little ribbing already done and the needle is in home position. Notice that both socks are in the same orientation with the live yarn on the same side and the same needle.
  • Continue knitting in pattern until the cuff of both socks are the desired length.

  • Kenny - thank you for this tutorial! I decided to knit 2 socks on magic loop and was having a hell of a time figuring out the cast-on, since they're cuff down. I appreciate it!!

  • Love this! Thank you so much! I heard about your method on The Knitter's Wading Pool podcast #6.

It took me some searching to find you, so I gave this post a thumbs up in Stumbleupon. Hope it helps other knitters of two socks on one circ get off to a great start.

  • Bless your heart! I have been trying to remember how this is done and found mention of you on Ravelry ML group. Thanks for giving my mind a nudge. I've bookmarked this for when "old mind" gets me again.

    Knit on!

  • Thanks for this tutorial, after knitting my first pair of socks toe-up on ML I decided I should try the next pair top-down but I wasn't sure how to cast on. This looks like just what I needed!

Found your site through the Ravelry ML group.

  • thanks--i am a novice sock knitter and loved this tutorial. you might add that it is helpful to join sock b into a round before finishing the cast on of sock a. otherwise i couldn't figure out how to join sock b into a round. maybe it's just that i am inexperienced.

  • Dude - you rule...I've done magic loop with just one sock and was flummoxed as to the two sock cast on. Again, you rock dude.

  • Thank you for clear pics and clear words! I have been fighting w/ the cast-on for 2-on-1. Now I can continue working on a pair of DPNs socks, 2-socks-on-2-circs and 2-on-1...finding the pros and cons of each. Thanks again!!!!!
